Cultural Differences between Hearing and Deaf Worlds

Objective

The participants reflect on cultural differences within the employment and business world world between hearing and deaf individuals and how to understand each other's perspective.

Content

The trainers divide the participants into two groups.

Group 1 is asked to reflect and analyse a list of prejudices that hearing people usually seem to have towards deaf people, for example in a work environment.

Group 2 analyses the opposite perspective: prejudices that deaf people have about hearing people in all kinds of areas of life.

The activity ends with a presentation of the two sides. Participants compare their reflections and express even very different opinions. Trainers trace these back to different experiences of life and personal growth.
